the matthew show revisited: Square (The Nerd Song) [Memphis version]

the matthew show revisited: week twenty five

Being a nerd in the music industry has always been a tricky road. While we certainly have representation in the ranks, it's usually at the fringes. And at a certain point, you have to decide whether to make it an easter egg or the sign on the door. After a couple of decades, I figured I might as well turn the inside out, and wrote this one.

Ironically, it was at a time when I was exploring the state of pop music online in the late aughts, which may explain why there are some Avril Lavigne touches in the structure of this one. No output without input.

We busted this out in one take at Ardent in Memphis during our Folk Alliance visit in 2012. It's a bit rowdier than the studio version from the Band That Never Was podcast, and the contrast is interesting. Speaking of easter eggs, I threw in some pics from my days with The Civilians in the '90s, including the late Joe Cada, whom we miss.
